Still

On a still morning recently, I observed this female Neon Skimmer, Libellula croceipennis, as she rested on the tip of a newly risen bloom spike of my Manfreda undulata, ‘Chocolate Chip’. The skimmer looks content, if not downright happy.

On the flip side, gossamer wings bisect distant garden greenery.

I puttered in the garden for a bit, attempting to catch pollinators at work. This pretty predator sat still, until at some point, it left. I hope it hunted mosquitos with success.

    • I think I’d need a lot more dragons and damsels to make a dent in the skeeter population! I am trying something new this summer, 3 mosquito traps. I’ve attempted them before, but with shallow water dishes, now I’m using buckets. I can’t tell for sure, but even with the rain we’ve had, I think there might be fewer. Or, I’m imagining that…:)

  1. Here’s the question that just occurred to me: do dragonflies and damselflies also spend time perching while their wings dry in the morning? You mentioned it was still, and at least in my neighborhood that would imply dew, and that always is the best time to catch butterflies perching rather than flitting.

Whatever this one’s intent, it’s a great photo!

  2. I’m giggling — this morning I was asked to log in before commenting, and was asked to subscribe. Since I got the email notification for this, I’m clearly subscribed. Those gremlins are running loose! Or, perhaps the great WP finally is getting its act together, if temporarily!

    • That sounds very familiar, I’ve had the same thing happen to me! I haven’t had trouble with WP for years and this past year, it’s just one thing after another. Grrr!
