Side Eye

This Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis, delivered a side eye as I ambled through my garden and greeted him with a cheery hey there, buddy!

He displayed his dewlap once or twice during our one-sided conversation, whether in competition or flirtation, I won’t make a guess.

I moved on with my chores and he continued his exploration of the Softleaf Yucca foliage, but kept a wary eye on my movements.

  1. I love the little green anoles. There’s less and less of them in my garden as the brown anoles have taken over.

  2. I was happy to see three green anoles today. One was scurrying up a drain pipe; the other two were making their way up a live oak. I’ve read that they increasingly live in trees, to get away from the brown anoles. It’s true that I always see the brown on the ground, or low on shrubbery, so maybe the technique works.

  3. Oh, that’s interesting. I’m going to have to look up information on these brown anoles. You’re the third person who has mentioned them in context with their invasive nature.

    The greens are fun critters!
